The mission of Common Ground is to serve as a comfortable, affordable, and safe home away from home for those traveling through Selma to contribute to, love on, and learn about our beloved city.
The building was built in the late 1800s and was used as a boarding house. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church acquired the building in the mid-1900s, and it became St. Paul’s Episcopal School in the 1960s. It was transitioned to a preschool in the 1980s called “Little Friends” and remained in operation until 2020, when Hurricane Zeta hit Selma and caused extensive damage.
The space was reimagined as a building to house outreach programs and was renovated to fit those needs. The renovation was completed in the Fall of 2022, just in time for the upstairs lodging to fulfill a great need for Selma. A tornado devastated much of Selma in January of 2023, and the relief workers were able to use Common Ground as they helped to clean up and rebuild our beloved city.
